The Best New Bars In Sydney’s Inner City And Inner West

January 28th, 2022 - by Brad Gillespie

While some of our local bars sadly closed during lockdown, others have opened or made a comeback at the end of 2021.

It’s a great time to get out and support the hard-hit hospitality sector while enjoying a few tipples. Win-win!

We’ve written before about a few of our favourite bars in the inner city and inner west. Now, we look at some of the latest welcome additions to Sydney’s drinking scene.

The Alex
35 Henderson Road, Alexandria

With Justin Hemmes at the helm of the successful Merivale Group, we’re in for a treat this summer at The Alex. Billed as ‘Backyard at The Alex’, Merivale’s latest local offering is a bar for the times with its massive outdoor, dog-friendly courtyard, food trucks and live music. Locals are delighted the heritage-listed Alexandria Hotel was saved at the last minute from the wrecking ball and have flocked to the doors since its recent opening.

Scarlet Weasel
169 Regent Street, Redfern

Locals were sad to see the back of Happy Ds, the dumplings and booze hotspot, but this new wine bar that has opened in its place is helping to ease the pain. Good tunes, fun vibes, DJs, and bar snacks are making this a fast favourite.

Bearded Tit
183 Regent Street, Redfern

This hugely popular, queer-friendly venue is part bar, part art gallery, part performance space, and is known for its rowdy live acts and rotating art shows. It’s been around since 2014 but endured a lengthy closure during lockdown. We’re thrilled to see it back in action.

Pino’s Vino e Cucina
199 Lawrence Street, Alexandria

A restaurant, rather than a bar, but worth a mention as this great new Italian eatery, which displaced a former local dive bar, has a terrific, robust wine list. It’s a great place to pop into for a plate of high-quality pasta and a vino or three.

Redfern Surf Club
60 Botany Road Alexandria

It’s been around for a few years now – and faithfully served up takeaway and delivery cocktails throughout lockdown – but we think this local is really hitting its stride. It serves up Australia craft beer, natural wine and signature cocktails with sunny, tropical vibes to a surf rock ‘n’ roll, punk soundtrack.

The Redfern
106 George Street, Redfern

This 100-year-old pub, downstairs from the popular Misfits bar, has been lovingly restored to make an exciting new neighbourhood destination. There’s 26 beers on tap, an excellent wine selection and gourmet pub snacks to enjoy.

The Barrie
107-109 Regent Street, Chippendale

If live music and DJs til 4am are your thing, then get yourself to The Barrie, which opened in 2021 as Sydney’s lockdown hit. Housed in what was Freda’s, in the heart of funky Chippendale, this bar is run by Chris Garner (ex-Frankie’s Pizza) who named it after his racing car driving grandfather. Buckle up for a big night out with great food and drinks and Happy Hour weeknights from 4-6pm.
