The Best Food Vans In Sydney’s Inner City And Inner West

May 6th, 2022 - by Brad Gillespie

Update your socials to stay in touch with where Sydney’s cult food van favourites are currently roaming.

Organic Mexican. Classic American diner fare. Vegan doughnuts. Food trucks in Sydney are officially a thing with some really finding their groove during a time when outdoor dining is not just fun but safe and smart. Make your tastebuds smile while supporting these local small businesses doing interesting things.

Firepop

A roaming food stand that gets around at enough inner city venues, like The Alex in Alexandria and One Drop Breaking Co. in Botany, to qualify. Firepop specialises in crackling, crunch skewers or ‘pops’ made with high-grade beef and obvious love served from its flamboyant fire-red dragon van. Check their Facebook or Instagram for location updates and news.

Wholly Schnitt

Also regularly parked at The Alex, Wholly Schnitt does giant schnittys served with flare and flavour. Apparently, the business was born due to a pregnant wife’s craving for late-night schnittys; when they’re this good, we can see why. The Wholly Schnit schnitzel is a rift on Harry’s Café de Wheels famous Tiger Pie – a gigantic chicken schnitzel topped with a generous amount of mashed potato, peas and gravy that’s gained its own iconic status.

Rico’s Taco Truck

Some of Sydney’s best tacos are now served hot from Rico’s Taco Truck, including regular parking at The Grifter Brewing Co. in Marrickville and Gelato Messina Rosebery. We love the authentic flavours, such as the chorizo al pastor braised-beef taco with salsa roja. These rival the best taco trucks in Los Angeles and if you’ve had those, you know that’s saying something.

The Nighthawk

When hatted chefs branch out into food trucks, what you get is The Nighthawk – vintage food trucks serving American diner classics such as a sensational Cuban or Philly Cheesesteak. The diner has a Marrickville address and is open monthly for tastings, geared toward those wishing to check out the food before booking a wedding or other large event. Check out The Nighthawk’s Instagram for cool events they’re currently hitting. You can also order via delivery apps, though when it comes to food vans that feels a bit like cheating.

OMG! Decadent Doughnuts

OMG!’s gluten-free, vegan doughnuts have become quite the franchise, with locations across Australia and coming soon to NZ. Not just vegan, they’re free of gluten, egg, nuts, dairy, wheat, yeast and sulphites. They’re also moreish and come in interesting flavours like Tasmanian raspberry and coconut. Try them at locations throughout Sydney including inner-city markets like Orange Grove Markets in Lilyfield and Marrickville Markets.

Agape Organic

Based in Botany but roaming around a lot, Agape Organic has gained a loyal following for its tasty organic fare, including chilli dogs, nachos and loaded fries. The bright red truck is often pulled up outside the Seymour Centre in Chippendale.
