Best Art, Architecture And Cultural Tours Of Sydney’s Inner City And Inner West

From self-guided walks to tours that take in food and art, here are our eight picks for the best tours of art, architecture and culture in our vibrant and creative area.
1. Sydney Expert street art walk
Sydney Expert offers a free, self guided inner west street art walk.
Starting in St Peters, the walk then winds through Enmore before finishing in Newtown. These suburbs are popular with street artists and you’ll get to see some excellent examples of different styles of street art along the route.

2. Art Gallery of NSW gallery tours
The Art Gallery of NSW offers plenty of wonderful on-site and off-site events, including gallery tours.
On 31 August, they’re running an art walk in Sydney’s inner city, which visits several amazing galleries. There’s also a tour to Darlinghurst, and one to Ultimo and Camperdown to visit unique galleries, including UTS Gallery and the Chau Chak Wing Museum.

3. Newtown Chewtown
Sydney Sauce runs a cool walking tour that combines street art with awesome food in Newtown. Newtown Chewtown will take in some iconic street art (starting with the “I Have A Dream” mural) and visit four restaurants featuring food from around the world (vegans and vegetarians are catered for), as well as a brewery.
4. Creative trails
Don’t just tour the streets or the galleries - meet the artists and watch them at work in their creative spaces as part of Inner West Council’s Creative Trail. This year the Midjuburi Creative Trails weekend will be held on 2-3 November 2024 in Dulwich Hill, Marrickville, Sydenham and Tempe.
5. Ultimate Sydney Walking Tour
Discover Sydney’s origins with this regular walking tour covering history, landways, art and more, from Sydney Sauce.
Great for locals, families and overseas guests or tourists, the approximately three hour walking tour runs Mondays and Wednesdays at 10am and 1.30pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 2pm and 5:30pm from 15 April to 28 September.
The walking tour costs $65 per person leaves from Customs House. Group sizes are limited to 12 people

6. Sydney Architecture Walks
If you're really interested in architecture and our built environment look no further than Sydney Architecture Walks, who sell themselves as “urban tours for lovers of architecture”.
“We want you to understand the why of the city whilst we explore the most provocative and inspiring projects Sydney houses – works of contemporary architecture, public art and landscape that inspire and delight but also projects that reveal something of Sydney’s grimy pulse,” their website claims.
From the Opera House to more local offerings featuring Chippendale and Ultimo, there’s plenty to choose from. They even have a bike tour of Redfern, Waterloo and Surry Hills covering big name architects. Tours start from around $44.
7. Australian Architecture Association
Who better to tour the eclectic architectural styles of Sydney with than a qualified architect? Australian Architecture Association tours cover different areas of Sydney from Sydney City to the harbour, Pyrmont, Redfern and Ultimo.
One of their regular 90 minute tours is of Chippendale, where you’ll see everything from the innovative, modern, green-rated Central park complex to Mortuary Station and the Old Clare Hotel. It’s this diverse range of architecture that makes our area truly unique. Book online!
8. Self Guided Walks
Inner West Council offers free self guided heritage walking tours that focus on people, places and things that have created our unique area. The City of Sydney has created an app called Sydney Culture Walks, that will let you see our city in a new light, with over 400 places and curated walking tours included.
