Aerial Adventures: The Rise Of Circus Arts And Aerial Yoga Classes In Sydney’s Inner City And Inner West
Have you ever dreamed of running away and joining the circus?
If you’ve ever dreamed of joining the circus (or sending your kids there), you’re in luck. Circus arts and aerial classes, like trapeze, aerial yoga, and more, are on the rise in Sydney’s inner city and inner west, and there are classes to suit all ages and skill levels. Here’s a selection of what our neighbourhood has to offer budding and wannabe circus performers.
Sydney Trapeze School
St Peters and Marrickville
Don’t let the name fool you. Yes, you can learn trapeze at Sydney Trapeze School, but you can learn many other circus arts here too. Choose from indoor flying trapeze at the St Peters location or outdoor flying trapeze classes at the Sydney Portugal Community Club in Marrickville. The School also runs classes in everything from tumbling, to trampolining, to aerial skills like lyra (doing tricks in a hoop suspended in the air) and silks (performing aerial acrobatics while hanging from two pieces of special fabric). Kids are well catered for with after-school and weekend classes, as well as school holiday camps. Sydney Trapeze School also hosts birthday parties (for adults and kids), hens and bucks dos, and even work team building events.
AcroPals
Marrickville and St Peters
AcroPals combines sports acrobatics, dance acro and tumbling to create a fun, friendly and non-competitive acrobatics program for children. With a big focus on inclusivity, all ages and skill levels are welcome at AcroPals. Classes include gymnastics floor skills (like tumbling, jumps, flips, and leaps) as well as elements from other disciplines like dance, cheer, and martial arts. School holiday workshops are available at Marrickville and St Peters. Adults keen to experience AcroPals for themselves can try a level 5 class.
The Movement Academy
Rosebery
If you’re serious about your circus arts, the Movement Academy is the place for you. For more than seven years, it has been providing superior coaching to athletes, performing artists, and everyday ‘movement enthusiasts’ chasing strength, mobility, and performance. Classes cover everything from acrobatics to handstands, contortion, trapeze, hammock, and more. The Movement Academy also offers school holiday workshops, so the kids can get involved in aerial fun and other circus skills such as acrobatics, juggling, and hula hooping.
Dancing in the Air
Camperdown
Dancing in the Air’s founder Olga Sidorova is a graduate of the Moscow Circus School and has toured with the Moscow State Circus and Cirque de Soleil, so you can be sure she knows her stuff. Dancing in the Air is an advanced training program that ‘seeks to push the boundaries of aerial performance.’ The winter edition of Dancing in the Air’s Creative Aerial Workshop is running at the University of Sydney, Camperdown, over three Saturdays in July.
Flying Yogis
Annandale
Flying Yogis’ programs for children mix yoga’s mindfulness with gymnastics and acro’s agility and coordination. With a range of classes that offer everything from pure acro to pure yoga and everything in between, there’s something for every child. Kids can learn yoga poses, tumbles, flips, handstands, cartwheels, backbends, and more. Classes start at 2.5 years old. Primary school-aged kids will enjoy the school holiday camps, which offer a different schedule of activities every day.
Sydney Pole
Camperdown
As the name suggests, Sydney Pole is a pole dancing studio, but it also offers several circus arts classes. At their flagship Camperdown location, the largest pole dancing studio in the world, you can take classes in contortion, aerial hammock, handstands and acro, among others.
And finally...
Sydney Opera House is even getting in on the circus act - Let’s Make a Circus is running this school holidays, with an interactive workshop from Flying Fruit Fly Circus Artistic Director Anni Davey. or take the kids to a real circus tent with Stardust Circus touring Sydney this winter.
